After three years at Sun City, the world’s third largest pickleball tournament will move to a new location for this year’s state championships at Pueblo El Mirage RV & Golf Resort, 11201 N. El Mirage Rd. The games will be played Feb. 19 through Feb. 23 and feature competitors from across the United States and Canada.
In the past year, Pueblo El Mirage RV & Golf Resort has installed 16 new pickleball courts and is now hosting the upcoming 2014 Arizona State Pickleball Championships under the Grand Canyon State Games and Phoenix Regional Sports Commission.
Sun City has planned a major renovation of its Marinette Recreation Center and this prompted the search for a new venue. Since 2001, pickleball tournaments have been growing in Arizona and pushing the limits of all venues requiring 16, 20, and even 28 courts in the recent national games in Buckeye last November.
Pickleball entered the Grand Canyon State Games three years ago and has grown to 350 to 400 players of all ages.
The tournament is third behind the USAPA Nationals and the Huntsman World Senior Games.
